Skin in general can be very hard to maintain, especially the skin of your face. Some people have combination skin, some oily, some dry, mature and the list goes on. This is a topic that we are going to have a lot to talk about in, because quite frankly I think this is something that many struggle with. Maintaining a healthy balance of moisture and dryness and minimizing pore size I believe is something that everyone is looking for.
Personally, I struggle with combination skin. My T-Zone is oily and the rest is dry. The worst time of year for me is now, during the winter when the climate in our house is incredibly dry from the furnace. My pores are too large for my liking and I still fight acne at 25 years old. I have to work extremely hard to maintain decent skin. My skin is very sensitive to certain cleansers and moisturizers and can break out over just about anything. I’m going to share a picture of my face, from today, zero make up, zero editing. I’m going to take you on my journey to better skin.
You can see my large pores, uneven skin tone, acne, acne scars and last but not least very dark circles under my eyes. As you can all tell now, my make up does wonders.
I realize that my skin is less than ideal, but it has come a long way believe it or not. 5 steps that have gotten me this far include:
- Washing my face morning and night.
- Using a special night cream for fighting acne.
- Drinking at least 6 glasses of water/day.
- Using moisturizer. This is an important one, and there are plenty that work for combo skin.
- Wearing mineral based make up.
I’m going to try an assortment of products over time to share with you what works for me and what doesn’t. The pros and cons and more. As well as products that work for additional skin types.
I would love to hear your story, or if you have a certain issue with your skin you are trying to resolve. If there is a product you are hesitant to try, I would also love to hear about it. Please email me with any questions or concerns tara@throughhazeleyesblog.com.

great idea , Tara,
I still have a T-zone combo and I am 53 (gasp!!) I occasionally still have breakouts too. I do drink lots of water, and only wear makeup when I need to (in public). I use little products on my face, sometimes just plain warm water to rinse my face… and an oil free moisturizer when needed.
looking forward to some new young tips
I use Proactiv and now I don’t breat out like I use to thank God! I also use oil free moisturizers on my face, because my face gets so oily in the t zone too.
This is such a great idea. I have combination skin too and the winter is tough on my skin. I found your blog through momdot
cant wait to hear. I too have the same skin type combination. I also fight the acne.
I have combo skin, large pores, baggy under eyes and breakouts as well, it’s such a struggle! I’m looking forward to reading your tips and thoughts!
Hey Tara! Great idea! I have a touch of rosacea on my cheeks that requires pretty major moisturizing. I have started using Spagirl Gourmet, and love their products. I would love you to try theirs too!
I can’t wait to hear more tips!
I would love to hear what works for your acne! I have issues with it too! But these are great tips and a great post!!!!
I have the same problems as you exactly – to a tee! So I will definitely be interested in what you find works for you.
My skin is so dry! I use moisturizers but I really need to do that “water” thing! I don’t drink enough water! Great post!
Thanks for this Tara! My T Zone is a lot oilier than the rest of my face. The eyes are RIDICULOUSLY dark. But I’m hoping with your help, I’ll find relief. thanks!
Water is such a downfall for me. I try hard to drink more of it but I’m just a soda junkie.
I completely forgot that by drinking water you can improve your skin. But I need more help than that.
I can’t wait to see your trial and errors here.
I highly recommend Aromaleigh mineral cosmetics. It’s a mom and pop internet based enterprise. I have used them and it is very light and smooth.
I’ve been very lacking on the water intake, maybe that’s one of my problems.
I need to use moiturizer EVER day. Even the days I am home in PJs. Thanks for the tips!

I struggle with an oily t-zone as well. I also have adult acne and I hate it. I have yet to find a product that I am in love with. I took Accutane in college and my dermatologist wants to repeat it. I am 38 and I am NOT going through that again. I would love to hear if you find a product that helps adult acne. Still searching…
One of the things I definitely need to do is drink more water. It’s so good on so many levels and I know my skin needs all the help it can get this time of year.
And, the dark circles. Oh, the circles. I don’t wear much makeup. In fact, most days I don’t wear any but I *do* need to figure out how to hide these circles!
