10 Tips For Planning a Unique Baby Shower

10 Tips For Planning a Unique Baby Shower

No Comments 23 September 2010

1

So you have a baby shower to plan? As fun as they are they can be a lot of work. I’m going to share a few tips to make plans run a little smoother and ensure happy guests and happy new mommy. Please remember that these are all optional!

1.Get a guest list together. I think this is important to start at the very beginning of the planning process as you tend to think of others as time goes on. Get a list from the new mom and dad along with addresses and decide if this will be a couples, family or women only shower so you know who to address the invites.

2. Be sure you know the gender of the baby or whether or not they are finding out. You’re going to want to create a color scheme and this should depend upon the new nursery colors, etc. Maybe they’re not finding out? (We didn’t!) There are plenty of neutral colors to choose from.

3. Timing is surely everything when it comes to a Baby Shower. You want to schedule it early enough in case the mom is not comfortable in the very end, but of course quite into the pregnancy so she has a nice size baby bump. I find that month 7 is usually good timing.

4. Okay, now you should have most of your information compiled, the last part of the compiling is the place. Where are you going to hold the baby shower? Is it a small enough group to hold in someones’ home, or do you need a hall of some sort?

5. After you’ve decided upon your colors, have a concrete guest list, place and date it is a good time to choose and order the invitations. My absolute favorite place to purchase Birthday or Shower Invitations, Greeting Cards, etc. is Tiny Prints. You will find unique design, excellent quality and color.

6. When you’re mailing the Invites it’s a good idea to include a separate tag naming where the new parents are registered. Something else I have done in the past is add another tag stating if they bring a package of diapers they will be included in a door prize drawing.

7. The invitations are on their way, or will be shortly, so now you can decide on your menu. Will it be a full on lunch, or more snacky food? What beverages will you offer? Where will you order the cake from? There are so many fun ideas out there.

8. Now that you’ve gotten most of the decision making out of the way it is time for the fun stuff! Decide what games and how many of them you will be playing. This will probably depend on what type of shower you decided to throw (ie-couples, women?).

9.  You know where you’re having it, so you know what you have to work with decorating-wise. Head to your nearest decorating supply store to stock up on the streamers, gift bags and more. While you’re there you may be able to find prizes for the games as well. You can add a twist and make the prize bags unique by adding tags welcoming the new baby with his or her name.

10. Last but not least and hopefully the most simple, just have fun! If you enjoy what you’re doing then everyone else will certainly have an excellent time.

Back to School with Avocados From Mexico

The Avocado is in the top 5 among my favorite fruits and vegetables that I use on a nearly daily basis. I can simply slice it up for the kids to snack on with a touch of salt and pepper or I can make an extravagant meal using it. And the flavor, is just incredible, it compliments so many other flavors. My absolute favorite snack is guacamole with tortilla chips, but only if it’s homemade.

I’m going to share a series of after school friendly recipes using Avocados from Mexico as one of the top ingredients. Not only will your children love these, but you’ll be reassured knowing that they are getting some key nutrients. In the mean time I invite you to browse the Avocados from Mexico website. There is a wealth of information there such as how to purchase an avocado or how to tell if it is ripe. There is a spot for kids and of course numerous recipes.

Tomorrow will be Avocado Mac N Cheese!

Under Construction

Whew, what a summer. It’s been so much fun, I’ll be sure to talk about that more in a later post. For now I want to note that I’m temporarily under construction. Everything is still here, I’m just tweaking a little. You know, new season=new look and all that. By Monday I should be all the way complete. So please pardon my dust and enjoy one of the last of only a few weekends left of the gorgeous summer!

Organizing My Life with Orange Circle Studio {Giveaway}

16 Comments 23 August 2010

I’m in a constant battle with myself to become an all around organized person. As life and details change though, I need to be able to re-organize with ease. Which, as it turns out is not always that easy. This applies anywhere from my home to my budget and everything in between, school, career, extra curricular activities, etc. I’m that person who has notes everywhere. I’m always afraid of forgetting something and if I don’t write it down I won’t be able to sleep at night because that is all I will think about. There is nothing more important than my wall calendar because I need to be able, at a glance, see what is on the schedule for the day.

I have never been more happy with a calendar than I have been with my new Orange Circle Studio Calendars. I love each of the following for different reasons:

183

This little beauty, the Bold Blossoms Do-It-All Planner, is like my own personal handbook. I refer to this for many many important aspects in my daily life. I have my budget all written out for the next several months in here right down to the day and amount I need to pay what. You look at a week at a time in here and each week is almost like a chart. I have the columns going down which represent the days of the week and the rows going across are for each family member so each person has there own little rectangle and I can keep track of appointments, sports events, everything and know exactly where I need to be and when. Last but not least there are tear out To Do and Shopping lists in the back of the book. I sincerely cannot say enough good about this precious little book.

185

186

Now I’ve received 3 others which are all wall calendars, but again are useful in their own ways. For example, I actually prefer to have a wall calendar in my kitchen and in the office for the specific reason that if I have something to jot down quick I’m usually in one of those areas while on the phone. I know this creates more spots I need to check at the beginning of the day and might have the potential to cause conflict. However I’ve gotten used to coordinating all calendars at some point each day to make sure there isn’t something I’ve jotted in one and not the other.

180

I keep Mom’s 24/7 Calendar in my kitchen. This is magnetized so I have it hanging right on the side of my refrigerator. There is a spot to keep a pen at the top  and the bottom portion are columns for each family member. You can view the calendar portion and column portion at the same time and there is also a weekly shopping/to do list attached to bottom portion! Absolutely perfect for a busy lifestyle.

181

I keep the Bold Blossoms Do It All calendar in my office area. At the risk of repeating myself a little here I will go ahead and say this is similar to the first I introduced to you, except that it is in wall form and I like to post my budget in the book as that is able to close and become more private. I love the pockets at the bottom of this, I keep coupons and a few other paper documents that need attention in there. I would also like to point out that the previous 3 are 17 Month calendars and they start in August. How perfect is that for the Back to School routine?

Last but not least is the Butterfly wall calendar. This is because I appreciate beautiful photography. There is just something truly peaceful about a butterfly. They’re just so quiet and yet so colorful. I have this hanging in my daughters room. I realize she’s only 2 and has no idea what it’s about, but she definitely enjoys the images and they tie in with her decor.

These are only a few of what you will find at Orange Circle Studio. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that there is something for everyone. Something from Orange Circle would make a perfect gift for someone or for yourself.

The Giveaway:

Tell me in the comments which Orange Circle Studio calendar is your favorite from their website and you will be entered to win a prize pack including each of the calendars I mentioned.

Make Father’s Day Fun and Inexpensive with T.J. Maxx and Marshalls

1 Comment 16 June 2010

With Father’s Day right around the corner I’m sure there are many of us hustling to find that perfect gift. Personally I’ve been working overtime trying to find the perfect gift (without going over budget) for each my dad and my husband, in coordination with the kiddos. I lucked out at T.J. Maxx for my husband, I spent $25.00 and bought him two things that he’s really been wanting and needing.

Gift numero uno, the NFL football. Last fall Rob lost his football in tragic incident, leaving his football deflated and un-repairable. He’s been wanting to replace it, but alas, has not gotten around to it. Surprise!

055

I’m willing to bet I spent less on it than if he were to head to nearest sporting goods store to pick it up. $9.99, compared to $15.99 retail.

The next gift is one that he really needs. I’m not sure when the last time was that Rob invested in a pair of shorts, but I’m certain it’s been a while. All of his shorts, except maybe 1 pair, have a hole, tear or stain on them. I found American Eagle Cargo Shorts, in his favorite color for shorts, for just $14.99, compared to $28.00 retail!

056

Since I was already in T.J. Maxx and I have this really bad self control issue when it comes to shopping, I had to browse a little further. I found these Calvin Klein shades for just $8.99. I actually needed these, because wouldn’t you know that coincidentally on the same day I was going to T.J. Maxx somebody sat on and broke my previous pair.

054

Now, just to give you an idea of what other treasures lie within the doors of your closest T.J. Maxx, I’d like to share this next photo. T.J. Maxx is one of my favorite places to shop for newborn props. Seriously, how cute is this?

Getting back to the reason for this post. Let’s admit it, men in general are hard to shop for. They either have everything they want, or what they want is so far in left field there’s no way I’d be able to pull it off. Here are a few more examples what you could find for the dad(s) in you life:

  • For the “Techie” Dad: If dad is always in search of the newest gadgets, why not pick up some great accessories to pair with them. Get some MP3 add-ons like speakers, headphones or a leather carrying case to make his music listening experience a special one. You can also grab some fun laptop and office supplies that can make work more enjoyable.

  • For the “Sports Enthusiast”: For the sports fanatic in your life purchase  some apparel from his favorite sports team so he can showcase his pride. You can complete the package with a new pair of brand-name sneakers.

  • For The Gourmet Chef Fanatic: With summer right around the corner help get him prepared with grilling tools and unique spices. A new recipe book and apron will guarantee a summer full of tasty treats.

  • For the “Beach Bum”: If dad is happiest at the beach, help him update those faded swim trunks and worn out flip flops with brand new beach gear.Add in a beach towel and a pair of designer shades to complete the look.

So there you have it! Scoot over to T.J. Maxx or Marshalls tonight and get them taken care of! There is truly something for everyone at low low prices.
