My little Ry when he was Olivia’s age. These were taken on what became Olivia’s birthday 2 years later. Look at how much more hair he had than Olivia has!

Now I went a little into prep before with the bandannas, where I ordered and bought my items from and the cute Pirate Ship we used as a center piece. Now I’ll share with you the rest of my preperation…
Here are our finished treasure chests. We filled these with the goodies included from Birthday Express. We then fit all 18 of the chests into a cardboard box (boring, I know) which was the Treasure Chest to be buried. I buried it under a giant pile of leaves and sticks in a secluded area of our yard.
When each child arrived they were given their bandanna and foam sword.
They could choose their water from the platter if they wished or could wait. It was a very hot day so I labeled waters for each child that I had sitting out on the main table. Pizza arrived at the same time as the kids, so most ate while waiting for others and then they all had a few minutes to play and get comfortable with the atmosphere.
We set everything up in a scavenger hunt/obstacle course style. We made a scavanger hunt list, the kids had to follow the clues to lead them to their next obstacle which would end at the buried treasure.
To begin they had to Walk the Plank. In our case, as you can see, we mounted a plank over a baby pool with cement blocks. I’m sure there are other ways you can do this and possibly over a larger pool, but we had too many children to the amount of adults and I didn’t want any little ones falling into a large pool.
They were then led to Mark the X on the Spot. I drew a silly map and created an X with velcro to mark the spot with. We used an extra bandanna to tie around their eyes, spun them around and let them mark the spot. We nailed the map to the tree that it is leaning on here.
Next it was to the sandbox to find their compasses and the beginning of their treasure. I spread plastic compasses and gold coins across the top layer of the sandbox. I didn’t bury them because there were going to be 18 possible guests and I wasn’t sure about 18 kids all digging in the sandbox at once.
From there they used their compass to point them in the direction of the treasure. They all seemed to figure it out at once and were so excited!
After each child chose their own treasure chest we labeled them and then moved on to the Pinata. From there it was cake and presents. I could not find what I was looking for in a Pirate style cake locally so I made my own sheet cake. I bought the specific cardboard to place it on and baked 2 9×12 in cakes, 1 white 1 chocolate. I had to trim them down to make sure they were going to be smooth under the homemade buttercream frosting. I then topped the cake with a Pirate Lego set that I found on sale at Target a couple months ago.
There are times when I sit around thinking (this is when I actually get time to sit around and think, who knew right?), no really, it does happen sometimes. Ok, sometimes I wonder how dull life would be without my children. Rob and didn’t plan on having children as young as we did, but we did, and couldn’t be happier honest to goodness. Now we’ve asked each other the question several times, what would we do? Sure, we could travel, have more money, not have to pack a diaper bag, blah blah blah. Would it really be worth it though? I think some of the times I’ve laughed the hardest is at phrases, stories, etc. that have come out of Ryan’s mouth. Even though Miss Olivia can’t talk yet, she still keeps us laughing.
“It” being the fact that my children are growing up so very fast on me. It’s happening right before my eyes and I feel like it’s just flying by. Really, it feels like just yesterday that Ryan was born. Now, now he’s starting Kindergarten this September. Kindergarten? I have to keep reminding myself because I cannot believe it. Last week was one full of tears for me. We attended Kindergarten round up on a Wednesday and then he graduated Pre-School the following day.
Starting off parenthood as young and un-experienced for me made me nervous, I mean, how was I going to do it at just 20 years old? Most people claimed that I was still a child, how was going to take care of one of my own? I have to say that Ryan has made it this far and has blossomed so well in a way that makes me so proud of him and also Rob and I as parents. We did it, all of us as a family, we really did and of course have an amazing future ahead of us I’m sure. This is still the beginning in so many ways as well.
Here’s to an exciting (and emotional) future!

Class of 2022!

We spent part of the recent Mother’s Day at the house of some close friends of ours. They, on Friday, had taken a trip to our local Humane Society to look at the dogs for their son who is turning 13 this week. They lost their oldest dog a couple weeks ago to old age, and their golden retriever, Charlie, has been lonely.
They went in empty handed and walked out with a brand new 8 week old pup. A Schipperke/Border Collie mix. To say that while we over there I didn’t fall in love with this pup would be a lie. He was just the sweetest pup ever. On the way home from their house my husband went on and on about how we needed to go see his brothers and sisters, we really should rescue one. He is a major dog lover. I himmed and hawed, but yesterday gave in when he said “lets just go look”. So we looked, he was the last one and there was no way I could leave him there by himself without any of his brothers and sisters left.
We are now the proud owners of our very own Schipperke/Border Collie mix. We have named him Oscar (after looking through a baby book and much discussion last night). He is the sweetest puppy ever. He loves to snuggle and always wants to be right where we are. I’m crossing my fingers, but we’ve had him almost 24 hours without ONE accident in the house! Even now, while I type he lays curled up at my feet. He is excellent with the children and LOVE running around with Ryan. I couldn’t be happier with him!
